I spent all day Saturday, and all day Sunday behind my computer at home in Las Vegas.. In between all my travel, I have been trying to get all my taxes done. And it’s not a simple 1040 EZ or anything…
A few months ago I started checking out receipt scanners. Dumb receipts are made on thermal paper which is much like playing a trick on someone and creating it with disappearing ink. If you get it wet, or just normal TIME, the words and numbers just slowly disappear. So I thought, “Would I use a receipt scanner, or would it be an expensive paper weight??” I went to Office Depot to start pricing them and the Neat Receipts brand one (the only one that they carry) was $200.00. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend. The day after I looked at them, I saw the same scanner at Costco (I love Costco) for $150 so I took the plunge and bought it. The scanner sat on my bed for a few weeks as I kept traveling. When I finally got around to opening it and using it, I am surprised I didn’t get one sooner! It is SOOOOO easy; it reads all the info and puts it into appropriate columns in a database. I find myself going home from any where and just running the receipts through.
I tell this whole story because I spent Friday night, and all day Saturday and Sunday attached to that thing. Somewhere late Sat night after 8 hours of scanning, the program crashed and I lost all the info I had done that day. Like quickbooks, there isn’t a “save” function so you periodically have to go through and hit “back up”. Needless to say, I learned my lesson, and now update every hour!
Sunday evening, I got on the road to LA. I made a quick stop in Rancho Cucamonga where I met up with Gabriel Ruediger and his girlfriend Kim. They were eating at Olive Garden so I grabbed a salad and some bread sticks.. Yum! I kept on my way to Huntington Beach where I stayed the night at my friend Ken Pavia’s house. I had a flight early in the AM and was going to be gone for a week!! Exhausted, I crashed out by 2:30am and set the alarm for 7am.
7:30 am, and I had been hitting the snooze over and over. I realized what I had done and leaped out of bed, ran down the hall to wake ken up, then dragged him out the door. He dropped me at Orange County Airport by 8am. My destination? Hilo, HI to hang with Urijah Faber, Joe Lauzon, and BJ Penn.. Yay! I grabbed some food at the airport and waited patiently (actually impatiently) for my flight.
Somehow, my seat was assigned on a row between the rows of the 2 rowdiest groups on the plane. The next 6 hours was entertainment as they depleted the vodka supply on the plane. I was on aloha airlines and had never flown them before, so was suprised by how much service they provided. We had croissant and egg sandwiches, drinks served multiple times, and dessert was hot, fresh chocolate chip cookies and milk. Wow! There was a movie on the plane that I didn’t care to watch, and tried to get some work done until the battery died on my lap top.. We finally landed in Honolulu at 12:10pm, Hawaii time.
It’s where I sit right now. I am waiting for my flight to take me to Hilo. I will be there 2 to 3 days and have to admit that I am sooooo excited by what the coming days may bring. I hope that I have good internet so that I can keep updating this!!
